there is so much that you need to get right, and there are so many on the market that are dreadfully wrong. It's an important product, many of the customers that buy these bags are first time mums and dads, it's hard to know exactly what you're going to need the changing bag for, they are often not a cheap purchase, and are usually bought with a host of other strange baby related products. Babies, it would seem, are not cheap.
it's not simply a case of just making a big bag with an adjustable strap, there's a very delicate balance to be achieved between form and function. So on to the details…
a changing bag needs to big enough to fit everything you need for a day out with the baby, but not so big that it becomes obtrusive, heavy and ugly. The problem with making a big bag, is that it loses it's subtly, it becomes clumsy looking. We spent a lot of time, making bag "shells" (just the outside bit) trying to find a shape that would give lots of room inside, look small on the outside, retain it's shape and actually look quite pretty. Our bag has beautiful curves on the corners, no hard edges, the sides slant in gently towards the top giving it more of a feminine handbag shape, we've made the bag as wide as a the average pram and kept the height to a minimum, the base becomes much wider at the bottom giving you lots of room inside, and a stable base for the bag.
Well it was obvious from the beginning that we needed to do something smart here. Our question was "What the hell are buggy manufacturers / designers thinking?" Every mum or dad hangs their bag on the back of their buggy, of course they do, who would carry a bag like that on their shoulder all day?! And yet this seems to be a concept that many of the major buggy manufacturers ignore and hardly seem to accommodate any features that makes this job any easier for the user. That's why our bag comes with 2 styles of detachable straps that fit every buggy on the market. One strap is a long adjustable strap for those buggies that have two handles or hooks, the other style of strap is 2 separate short handles that strap onto just about any part of a buggy. We even tried our bag on Sophia's bicycle, we easily strapped it onto the handlebars and rode round the studio.
But not so many that our bag looks like it's been issued by the army. Our bag has a total of 8 pockets! We decided that we needed to subtly integrate the pockets into the design of the bag, so on the outside, on either side, you will find two bottle pockets that compliment the curves of the bag, on the front you will find a single wide zip pocket seamlessly integrated, on the back you will find a wide slash pocket, so you can easily and quickly reach in a grab something quickly. Inside, there's a very large zip pocket on one side and on the other side you will find three pouch pockets for things like wet wipes and other bit's and pieces.
We're really proud to say that our Baby Changing Bag is beautifully produced right here in London. All of the metal components are coated in an antique gold finish and are imported from Italy. Even the six little studs on the base! We use a really nice dark olive green waterproof lining inside, it doesn't matter if something leaks or gets dirty in there, it won't spill out, you can just pull the lining out and wipe it with a damp cloth and it will be as good as new. We're going to start making these in about 5 different prints to start with in small batches, in our beautiful PVC coated fabrics, we'll introduce more prints later.
